![]() ![]() Rolling in sand once was enough for comfort for days - now it only lasted part of a single day. The air was bad.Īnd the itching grew every day. Oh, the prey was if anything more plentiful than normal, but he felt like he had once done long ago, when he was still searching for territory. The air in his cave had a discomfiting feeling - and it was little better in his valley. It was getting close to be time for brooding, even, and he was stocking up in preparation for the leaner times to come.īut his skin itched. The ground had rumbled loudly not many days before, and the most recent challenger was dispatched with suitable vigor. His cave was still large, his territory still rich. The ground rumbled at him for a long time, and he rumbled back. Crunchy, but surprisingly flavorsome - if he knew where they came from, he might consider moving for a time. One day he would catch it unawares let's see how well it sneaks missing a leg.Īt some point, small prey-things started to attempt to invade his territory not with timid caution looking for scraps, but boldly, often spitting at him with loud noises. Unfortunately, it always fled when he approached, only to return from another direction. Often the sneaky one would lurk around his valley, looking to seize his prey without a proper challenge. They might be strong, but he was always stronger. If they pressed their luck, he admonished them with a few clouts on the snout before sending them on their way. On rare occasions, one would return to roar at him, and he would roar back. Eventually they left to find distant territories, with one or two needing a few roars and a cuff or two to encourage them to go find their own food supply for a change. Some time after, there was more hunting and less eating, but he was always pleased to see the little ones grow. Sometimes, when enough time had passed, a roar from the next valley over signalled it was time to brood. His territory was the richest, his cave was the most comfortable, and his skin did not itch. When he hungered, he hunted and ate as he pleased. Usually they fled but sometimes they didn't, forcing him to leave his cave to demonstrate why he was in charge on occasion, they didn't limp away fast enough afterwards and he waddled back to his den to sleep the meal off. Others roared at the entrance to his valley, and he responded with all his vigor. The ground rumbled at him in approval, and he rumbled back happily. The sky roared at him, he roared back and the sky stayed put and shut up.
